Cedar Forest Denizen
Close-up blossom of a fairy slipper, or calypso orchid (Calypso bulbosa), an inconspicuous, relatively threatened member of sheltered northern white cedar and other mesic conifer forest floors.
Considered the most beautiful orchid in North America, this petite species blooms in late-May or early-June in northern Minnesota, when it deceives certain bee species into pollinating it by mimicing other flowers that have nectar.
