Bloodroot
This beautiful little flower "bleeds" from the stem & root if picked, and is not palatable to wildlife. One of the first forbs to emerge under mesic hardwood forests in the spring if the ground layer has not been degraded too much.

on March 3, 2012All the shots in this gallery are wonderful. This has a special appeal because next to hepatica, bloodroot is my favorite spring wildflower. (I waffle back and forth on which of the two tops the list.) It seems to be growing amongst trout lilies. Might you post some shots of them this coming spring?
