Swan Brawl
Trumpeter swans concentrate during winter in one of several locations in Minnesota, including this site in Monticello, arguably the most popular place to watch trumpeter swans in the state. These birds are very protective of their mates and young and can be frequently seen engaging in pair bonding and territorial displays which often culminate in short 'brawls' that last for only a fraction of a second before the subordinate family, pair or individual backs down. Unfortunately, artificial feeding is a problem at this site and causes the large concentrations, and does pose a risk to the health of this population if a disease outbreak were ever to occur

on Mar 04Very nice behavior shot. Alas, trumpeter swans are uncommon (not quite rare) sightings near my home. Mute swans seem to out-compete them for prime nesting sites. I agree about the problems raised by artificial feeding of waterfowl on local waterways. Even posting signs about the dangers to the birds doesn't seem to deter most people.
