Swan Portrait II
Female trumpeter swan (Cygnus buccinator) on its breeding marsh in central-Minnesota near Little Falls.
Trumpeter swans are the heaviest North American bird, with maximum wing-spans exceeding 10 feet, rivaling that of California condors.
Currently increasing annually at nearly 15% per year in the Upper Midwest, and likely exceeding 40,000 individuals in Minnesota as of 2020, the restoration of trumpeters is one of the state's greatest conservation success stories.
